Principal Electrical Engineer - Substations (ROI)

Join our dynamic Transmission & Distribution team as a principal plant focused engineer. The focus is on primary plant design for large‑scale infrastructure, grid connections, and private networks at voltage levels 110 k V–400 k V, covering feasibility, optioneering, FEED, detailed design, and design assurance on existing or brand‑new substations and other infrastructure.
Responsibilities
Primary plant layouts for HV substations
Equipment specifications for HV plant and associated equipment
Providing engineering design input to major infrastructure projects
Project development / pre‑construction: development of optimum cable routes considering length, thermal conditions, and land use
Development of specifications with technology‑specific specialists and external project partners
Tender evaluations, assessments, and design assurance activities
Design assurance of tender return documentation during tender evaluation and supplier meetings
Construction: reviewing supplier technical designs, undertaking manufacturing assurance audits, attending FAT, and providing commissioning support and fault‑resolution support
Qualifications
Degree in Electrical Engineering
Previous experience with a consultancy, contractor, or utility in the energy sector
Client experience with National Grid, ESB, Eir Grid, SHET, SSE, SPT or any other transmission utility or developer in the UK or Ireland
Extensive experience as FEED designer, detailed design, or owner’s engineer
Experience designing HV infrastructure at concept and FEED design stages
Experience in detailed design, design assurance and owners engineering is advantageous
Understanding of electrical AC HV plant infrastructure and equipment (both AIS and GIS)
Good team player with a client‑focused mindset and customer‑facing skills
Ability to work flexibly across multiple projects
Ideally project management experience (budget, time, and quality)
Experience managing multi‑discipline engineering projects
