Gas Networks Ireland operates and maintains Ireland’s €2.7bn, 14,664km national gas network, which is considered one of the safest and most modern renewables-ready gas networks in the world. Over 720,000 Irish homes and businesses trust Ireland’s gas network to provide efficient and reliable energy to meet their heating, cooking, manufacturing and transport needs.
The gas network is the cornerstone of Ireland’s energy system, securely supplying more than 30% of Ireland’s total energy, including 40% of all heating and almost 50% of the country’s electricity generation.
By working to replace natural gas with renewable gases, such as biomethane and green hydrogen, and complementing intermittent renewable electricity, Gas Networks Ireland is supporting Ireland’s journey to a cleaner energy future.
Gas Networks Ireland is now seeking to appoint a Head of Strategy and Business Planning.
The Role:
Reporting to the Director of Strategy & Regulation, the Head of Strategy and Business Planning will oversee the development of the organisation’s overall strategic direction and business plans and through a governance framework will support the delivery of key actions and outputs necessary to deliver the company’s business strategy. This person will also be responsible for managing the company’s price control submissions and for monitoring progress against them. The person will work closely with the Executive team to develop and implement the company’s strategic ambitions and ensure organisational direction is aligned with strategic objectives in the short, medium and long term.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Developing the company’s strategic vision, purpose and strategic plans with tangible actions and outputs aligned with strategic goals/outputs in the short, medium and long term.
Setting strategic objectives, targets and priorities across all areas of the business (regulated, growth and non-regulated) in collaboration with the Executive team.
Developing and maintaining a robust strategy development framework for the entire organisation including the regulated and unregulated elements as well as the enablers of business change (Innovation and CI) activity necessary to support the delivery of GNI’s strategy.
Managing all GNI price control submissions in relation to the five-year revenue reviews carried out by the CRU and NIAUR and related activities. This includes co-ordination of an internal price control cross functional team and relevant engagement with regulators.
Monitoring progress against the price controls in the intervening periods and ensuring that additional requirements (e.g. additional reporting, implementation of new incentives) identified by the CRU as part of the price control decision are implemented.
Monitoring the external price control environment to ensure that GNI are aware of emerging trends that need to be considered by the business.
Monitoring performance against strategic objectives across the organisation, holding functions to account through governance mechanisms to ensure delivery of agreed outcomes or outputs.
Identifying and understanding the broad strategic issues, challenges and emerging trends faced by the organisation (e.g. policy, regulation, climate change, people etc.) in order to take these potential future impacts into account in strategy development.
Managing and maintaining the five year business plan and the development of longer-term business plans that support the delivery of the strategic vision.
Responsible for Business Planning coordinating inputs and getting buy-in / sign-off from the Executive team, maintaining a short, medium and long-term outlook.
Providing guidance and direction to internal and external stakeholders on strategic plans.
Ensuring the company’s strategic ambitions and business plans are effectively communicated internally and externally.
Identifying gaps where changes required by the strategic objectives are not yet addressed by current or proposed change initiatives, and initiate proposals to address these gaps.
Developing future strategic vision documents in collaboration with other functions.
Continuously scanning the external environment to understand the impact of changing dynamics on the GNI strategy.
Developing external strategic relationships with energy industry players to support the development and delivery of the GNI strategy.
Managing, supporting and coaching the Strategy and Planning team and facilitating their development.
Other duties may also be assigned from time to time.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
Relevant qualification such as Business Degree, Engineering or Law or equivalent.
Previous experience in setting and implementing strategy to deliver outcomes.
Self-confidence, discipline and the ability to establish credibility at all levels in the business particularly at Executive Management and Board level.
Proven deep and analytical thinking capability.
Proven experience in energy and gas policy markets.
Experienced in net zero energy policies, market regimes and incentives.
Experienced in creating clear narratives and high-quality messaging.
Proven ability to distil complex business models into simple content for business decision making.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, manage ambiguity and meet challenging deadlines.
Demonstrated ability to successfully influence key internal and external stakeholders and identify external issues which may impact on the strategic direction of the organization.
Proven ability as an advocate for the development and implementation of change
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated leadership ability including proactive development, motivation and engagement of staff.
