Role Overview
ATG are seeking an experienced Principal Ecologist to lead a growing ecology team. This senior role will be pivotal in managing high-profile projects, mentoring junior ecologists, and driving the growth of our ecological consultancy services across Ireland.
As a Principal Ecologist, you will be responsible for leading ecological assessments, biodiversity strategies, and conservation projects while ensuring compliance with Irish and EU environmental regulations.
You will work closely with planners, engineers, developers, and government agencies to integrate ecological considerations into major infrastructure and development projects.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage ecological impact assessments (Ec IAs), Appropriate Assessments (AAs), and habitat surveys for large-scale projects.
Oversee and coordinate field surveys for protected species, habitats, and ecological monitoring.
Provide expert guidance on biodiversity enhancement, habitat restoration, and ecological mitigation measures.
Lead on strategic biodiversity planning, conservation projects, and nature-based solutions.
Ensure compliance with Irish and EU environmental legislation, including the Wildlife Acts, Birds & Habitats Directives, and EIA Regulations.
Manage and mentor a team of ecologists, providing technical oversight and career development support.
Prepare and review technical reports, Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), and Natura Impact Statements (NIS).
Engage with regulatory bodies, clients, local authorities, and NGOs on ecological matters.
Support business development by identifying opportunities, preparing tenders, and building client relationships.
Key Requirements
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
10+ years of experience in ecological consultancy or conservation, with a track record of leading complex projects.
Chartered status or membership of CIEEM (or working towards it) is highly desirable.
Strong expertise in Irish and EU biodiversity legislation, ecological assessment methodologies, and conservation policy.
Proven experience managing multidisciplinary teams and large-scale infrastructure or renewable energy projects.
Proficiency in GIS mapping tools (Arc GIS, QGIS) and ecological data analysis.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to liaise with clients, regulatory bodies, and project stakeholders.
Full, clean driving license (fieldwork and site visits required).
